1. Hi, we’re here with Brandy Sweesy. You’re the queen of Google+?
Hangouts, I’m the queen of Google Hangouts, not to be confused with G+.
2. Tell us about Google Hangouts.
Google Hangouts, I really think, are the humanization of your brand. So we started with blogging, which brought about authenticity and transparency. Then we moved into teleseminars, which gave a little bit of tonality. Then we moved into like a GoToWebinar, which was a visual with a tonality, and then video marketing. Then video marketing, it kind of widened the empathy gap with people and Hangouts really kind of closed the empathy gap in that we’re humans, stuff happens, technology goes wrong, as we talked about, so I really think Hangouts bring that psychologically and then also, they’re video marketing on nitrous.
3. Well, let’s back up. Hold on, you talk about empathy. Tell our viewers what you mean by empathy.
I think it’s very important, like when you’re trying to work with people, it’s incredibly important that they feel like they know you, that you can get them. Sometimes when, you know, in the expert space, you’re held in a certain esteem, so it’s like, “Well, that’s you, you of course have a video person and a microphone and wearing nice suits and you can’t really get me.” So the empathy gap is really about people being able to relate to you. If they can relate to you, then you’re better able to help them.
4. Tell us about Hangouts, when did you first get into it?
Actually a year ago next week.
5. No way! Tell us how that happened.
It was my birthday and I was being a little bit of a…kind of a wimp in launching another brand and I do well under pressure. I was like, “Oh, I’ll do a Hangout, that’ll be fantastic.” Then I had like 500 viewers and like 20,000 views after that and I was like, “Uhhh…why isn’t everyone doing Hangouts?” So back then I was really literally on the leading edge.
6. If you had one tip on Google Hangouts you can tell our viewers, what would it be?
Just do it. I mean, it really is. My favorite Hangout of last year was Richard Branson, Sir Richard Branson, and he asked for advice for entrepreneurs and his advice was, “Screw it, just do it.” That’s my favorite advice, like just do it. There’s nothing intimidating, you don’t need to be scripted, all you need is a little webcam, your own microphone or like an iPhone headset, just do it. It is insane what it will do for your brand.
7. So, tell us about your entrepreneurial background, your journey.
Oh, gosh. I’ve been an entrepreneur for well over 20 years. Mostly marketing, public relations, branding, and then I tripped into Hangouts last year.
8. Tell us how your approach to Google Hangouts is different?
Well, this is what I was saying at the beginning, like I’m the Hangout marketing expert as opposed to a Hangout or G+ expert. A lot of people don’t want to come unwillingly into a new platform. Do I think you should learn G+? Absolutely. When you learn it, dial me up, let me know about it. But you can use Hangouts without having to learn yet another social platform, so you can embed a Hangout on your website, so you get the Alexa rankings, you get a **** [0:03:40.6] social proof, you’re driving traffic to one location. Hangouts can crash, sometimes, so you can have it in your email responders, you’re driving traffic to one location, you already have your follow-up sequence going on.
Now I have a three-pronged approach. The other approach is to not neglect the YouTube portion of it. A lot of people will neglect the YouTube portion of it, so you should be keyword tagging it and putting in descriptions, calls to action, making sure that you mention your keywords, treat it like YouTube marketing. The reason why I rose to “fame”—I hate that term—but is that it’s really a three-pronged approach. So don’t get so bogged down or terrified of doing Hangouts and thinking that you have to learn G+ and get all of that, that’s just a whole ‘nother thing. No, Hangouts—boom—open your laptop, turn on your webcam and you’re ranking.
