1. Hi, we’re here with Gideon Shalwick. Gideon, tell us about your business.
I’m involved in video marketing. I help people grow their businesses using video marketing in particular, looking at the strategy side of things, how to target the right sort of audience on YouTube and using a place like YouTube to get to the right people and then grow that audience using YouTube as a platform.
2. Tell us about your entrepreneurial journey; how’d you get to where you are now?
Sure. I quit my job about eight years ago, it was a great job but I just didn’t feel happy in it. There were three things basically, the reasons why I quit. One was I didn’t feel that I could really have a creative outlet. Another one was that the day I stopped working would be the day I’d stop getting paid. The other one was I was building an asset for someone else. The day I would leave, I wouldn’t be able to take the asset with me. That was a problem. I thought, oh well, I’m going to quit my job and start a business.
We actually emigrated countries at the same time, me and my wife, and went to Australia and started the business there. That’s how we got started. My first product online was a book that I wrote in the personal development space. That got distributed to about 177 different countries around the world, it was way back, 8 years ago. Then I started moving into the video space after that.
3. Tell us about your video work now; what are you doing with video?
Now, a bit more recently I did quite a lot of work in video marketing education, so information publishing sort of business, but more recently, over the last year or two, I’ve been more looking at creating businesses that help people in video marketing other ways. Instead of doing education, we now create other kinds of products for businesses. The first business I’m starting up is one that looks at helping people make their videos look a lot better, much quicker, so it cuts down on editing time but creates a really beautiful video, so we’ve got some nice products for that. The next business is—well, that’s confidential at this stage. [Laughs]
4. Okay. Tell us, how can video help any entrepreneur make a connection with their audience?
Well, I mean, look at what we’re doing now, we’re talking to you guys over there watching us and if this was audio or just text, you just wouldn’t be making that same sort of connection with the audience. I think that’s one of the key things with video, is people can see you, they can interact with you, they can feel you in a way, they can see your body language, they can see the expression on your face. That’s really difficult to do with text and audio, so with video, for me the big thing is connection, connecting with your audience, with you guys watching us right now. When you have that connection, you can do a lot of really cool things.
We all know that saying, everybody wants to do business with other people they like, know, and trust and with video, I think it’s one of those key platforms or mediums where you can build that trust through building a connection in real time with people like this.
5. What are some of the tips that you could give our listeners, our watchers here, about how to develop trust?
Trust—well, I think the key thing is just really to be yourself. Trust really consists of three things, it’s being authentic, being able, and being reliable. When you combine those three things, that’s like a sweet spot for trust, with video you can do that, with the authenticity thing, it’s all about just being yourself, being vulnerable, being true to yourself or being true to your business focus, being authentic, showing this sort of behind the scenes sort of stuff. Ability is all about showing people that you can do what you promise you can do. It’s showing that you’re able. People need to trust you that you can do what you say you can do.
Then reliability is more about repeatability. Have you done it for other people, can you do it in the future for them, can you do it repeatedly over time?
So if you combine those three things, authenticity, ability, and reliability, you build trust naturally. You can do that beautifully with video.
6. If our viewers wanted to get more of you, where would they go? Where would they go to get more of you?
Probably just at my name, Gideon Shalwick, so if you Google that or go to GideonShelwick.com, there’s another business, the second business that I’m starting up now is called Splasheo, it’s splash with e-o at the end, .com.
7. Tell us about Splasheo.
